Can a Swiss Army Knife be an effective tool for an electrician in the UK? Does it have the resilience to meet the demands of standard tools in the electrical sector?
The Swiss Army Knife has a lot of heritage that ultimately stands for quality and precision from its knives supplied to the Swiss army. Despite its precision engineering, the Swiss Army Knife Electrician is not a tool that every UK electrician would use daily.

How many blades does the Swiss Army knife Electrician have?
Four. It has the standard sharp spear point blade that you would expect to find on any standard pen knife. It can be used for general cutting, such as a box opener or trimming cables insulation.
The next blade is referred to as a sheep’s foot blade. It is short and stubby and can be used again to trim insulation from electric cables. ( providing the bale is isolated).
The sheep’s foot blade has a half-moon indent blade designed for cable trimming.
Next comes the bottle opener and screwdriver with a wire cutter. Wow, a three in one blade that can open bottles, this Swiss Army Knife gets better by the second.
The screwdriver blade is substantial and can easily fit a large slotted screw and drive the screw home with relative ease.
The incorporated wire cutter relies on the use of the primary blade to shear the copper core.
Of course, the bottle opener can open as many beers as you wish in perpetuity.
What’s the Swiss Army Knife (electrician) made from?
The outer case is made from aluminium with a knurled finish that feels good in the hand. The blades are made from high-grade stainless steel, similar to Sndviks stainless steel.
With very little maintenance, the blades and outcast will remain stain-free and give years of service.
Why is it called the SAK electrician?
It’s hard to answer, Swiss Army Knives all have some designation related to the blade configuration.
A Swiss Army Knife with a saw blade is a forester. You can only assume that the addition of a screwdriver makes it the electrician!
Would you find a swiss army Knife electrician in an electrician’s toolbox?
Possibly, the Swiss Army Knife has limited applications for Uk electricians. If you could find a SAK in a UK electricians tool kit, it would be there for opening packaging and not used as an electrical tool.
However, in the US-Swiss Army knives are revered, and you would possibly find more than one knife in an electrician’s toolbox.
The UK generally has a different perception of knives, and they are considered more to be weapons than tools of the electrical industry.
Why is SAK popular?
Synonymous with quality, and what guy doesn’t like the idea of a quality pocket knife for the times in your life you might need one!
This is why people like the Swiss Army knife so much:
- Compact design with super sharp blades made from high-grade stainless steel.
- Unbeatable heritage as the SAK company was created in1897, which is 126 years of continually producing quality knives.
- Iconic styling, that has a feel of the wild west where men would spend their evening whittling wood pipes from prairie brush
- Slim profile encased in an aluminium scaled finished outer case for comfort and durability
- The compact design makes the knife unobtrusive. It makes the perfect stocking filler and a great gift for males and females in the family
- Design for all purposes, and the knives are considered fit for purpose depending on your selection. Superior design and quality materials surpass the competition
- Last but not least, the Swiss Army knife is a name trusted worldwide. Customers rely on Swiss Army knives so much that Victriknox gives a lifetime warranty against defects, materials and workmanship.
- Remember, no assembly is required.
Is the Swiss Army Knife Electrician insulated?
No, you would need to be very careful where you would use a SAK. You could be killed if you found yourself working on a live system and touched something with your Swiss Army Knife.
SAK knives are ok at removing insulation from cables and wires, but anything more could be considered dangerous.
When would a UK electrician use a Swiss Army Knife electrician version?
If it’s Friday afternoon and the job is coming to a close, and the apprentice has locked the tools in the van in anticipation of a good weekend, then an electrician may consider using a Swiss Army Knife.
Or if the electrician is working alone and they are held up at gunpoint, and all of the tools are taken except for the SAK.
Would an auto electrician use a Swiss Army Knife?
It’s possible, auto electricians work with much finer wires that are easier to cut. It would be feasible to find an auto electrician using the SAK for cable stripping and removing the bindings of wiring looms.
What tools can do a similar job to the SAK electrician?
In terms of pocket knives, there are many options available to the consumer, plus some very impressive multi-tools that offer so much more than a SAK.
But a tool that stands out is the leatherman multi-tool. It has a Pz screwdriver, slotted screwdriver, and heavy construction pliers with wire cutters, not to mention the other tools are all handy and are heavy duty compared to a SAK.
Is a Swiss Army Knife legal in the UK?
If the blade is folding and less than 3 inches in length, the knife would be legal in the UK.
However, UK society frowns upon the rising cases of knife crimes amongst teens and would view it unacceptable to carry a knife with you just because you can.
However, many Swiss Army Knives would be banned in the UK due to the blade length, and anyone carrying such a knife should be aware of the following.
Please note that it is an offence under the Criminal Justice Act 1988 to carry a knife with a blade of more than 3 inches/7.62 cm long in public and can lead to a fine and/or imprisonment unless there is a lawful reason for doing so.
